Join Curators for look into "Luxury and Power Persia to Greece" Exhibition

The British Museum will explore the exhibition 'Luxury and Power: Iran to Greece' in a free online event on 11 May 2023. The event will be hosted by curator Jamie Fraser and Keeper of the Department of the Middle East Paul Collins (Chair).

According to Gallery online, the exhibition explores the use of luxury as a political tool in the Middle East and Southeast Europe between 550-30 BC, and showcases a variety of objects from countries ranging from Afghanistan to Greece. The exhibit highlights the way the royal Achaemenid court of Persia used precious objects made from gold, silver, and glass to assert their authority and define a style of luxury that influenced the entire empire, from Egypt to India. It also delves into the fusion of eastern and western styles of luxury in the new Hellenistic age that was ushered in by Alexander the Great after he invaded the Persian empire.

The online event is part of the public program that supports the "Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece" exhibition, and will be held on the British Museum's website. Visitors can join the virtual event by registering in advance through the museum's website.

Museum is hosting the event on Zoom. If the event is fully booked, or you do not wish to use Zoom, you can also watch the event – as well as other events in the series – streamed on the Museum's events YouTube channel
